Malta’s manufacturing industry has long been a strong contributor to the country’s economy. Although new industries and economies such as iGaming, financial services and blockchain have overshadowed manufacturing, it still contributes to attracting investment and remains accountable for a significant 13% of all private sector employment. The sector, nowadays, is built on technical processes, innovation and advanced machinery, enabled by the fact that the sector’s workers have painstakingly established a strong, world-renowned reputation in precision, reliability and dedication.
Malta’s strategy for the manufacturing sector is built on five pillars, according to Malta Enterprise, namely:
- The attraction of new FDI investment;
- Ensuring that the existing FDI remains in Malta and grows;
- Supporting small and medium enterprises mainly through Business First;
- Supporting the larger Maltese-owned entities to keep growing in Malta and be more aggressive in export markets;
- And looking at new industries such as life sciences activities, and the production of medical cannabis.
In Malta, the Office of the Commissioner for Voluntary Organisations was set up by the Voluntary Organisations Act 2007. This aimed to strengthen the voluntary sector through various initiatives with the specific aim of promoting the work of VOs as well as encouraging their role as partners with the government in various initiatives. All voluntary organisations may apply for enrolment under the Voluntary Organisations Act, and NOUV is able to assist them with the application process.
While Voluntary Organisations are not obliged to enrol, enrolling will allow such organisations to:
- Make collections without the need for further authorisation;
- Benefit from grants, sponsorships or other financial aid provided by the Voluntary Organisations Fund or the Government;
- Immediately take advantage of policies and legislation supporting voluntary action that may be initiated by the Government or other related entities.
