Retail and consumer products

The past years have seen Malta’s retail sector undergo massive shifts in trends. From a sector dominated mostly by small family-owned businesses and a limited number of importers, wholesalers and distributors, the market flourished, mainly after Malta’s joining the EU. This meant the liberalisation of a market which encouraged foreign chains to set up shop, forcing local traders to rethink their distribution strategies. This led to a total overhaul in how retailers reached out to consumers, in consumer expectations and a revamp of the concept of customer experience and engagement.

Recent statistics account Malta’s retail sector to more than 20% of gross value added as it employs some 30,000 people – aided by the fact that Malta is a major tourist destination with over 1.8 million visitors per year.
